there. but first our top story live here at 5:30 a.m. at 30 rock in new york city. and we begin with the latest on the rapidly approaching fiscal cliff deadline of automatic tax hikes on everybody and what appears to be a stalemate in the negotiations. in his first interview since the election, president obama reiterated his demand that any deal must raise taxes on the highest earner. yesterday obama also appeared to showroom for flexibility on actually relowering those tax rates in the future. >> i don't think that the issue right now has to do with sitting in a room. the issue right now that's relevant is the acknowledgement that if we're going to raise revenues that are sufficient to balance with the very tough cuts that we've already made and the further reforms and entitlements that i'm prepared to make, that we're going to have to see the rates on the top 2% go up. and we're not going to be able to get a deal without it. p what i've suggested is let's essentially put a down payment on taxes. let's let tax rates on the upper income folks go up. and then let's set up a proce

already in the 60s kansas city dallas and antonio. new york city on the mild side current temperature at 50 degrees. when you factor in the warm temperatures and humidity in place we are going to have to deal with areas of dense fog and that's the story across portions of great lakes in chicago, portions of the southeast and city of new orleans part of southern texas so we can be see can the weather related tropical delays. take it easy out there. across portions of the midwest coastal areas of the southeast. 82 degrees will be the high temperature in dallas.antonio. upper 50s in new york city. upper 60s in the city of chicago. very unseasonable for this time of year. we are looking at upper 70s in the city of phoenix. we are looking at areas in the midwest. that frontal system exiting the rockies into portions of the dakotas and nebraskas. not a big deal with showers and storms. behind that system is when you start to notice a bit of a cool down in temperatures. we have showers through the northeast overnight now drying out and dealing with warm temperatures. heather and patty ann ev

degrees in rapid city and seeing temps around 20 to 25 above average and areas of south dakota, 35 degrees above your average, very warm temps there and we still have our problems across parts of the west and the next storm moving into northern california and this one is a very strong one. very significant rain will fall here, some areas eight inches of rain and a lot of the rivers in central california concerned about flooding for today and tonight. and this storm storms by tomorrow, and another one comes in on tuesday, wednesday, lingers a little into thursday and then dry things out and this is the most potent of all and mostly rain, another warm system, but a steady stream of tropical moisture and it will bring light showers throughout parts of the ohio valley, to the great lakes, tonight and this afternoon. and behind it, temps are going to warm up a lot. in fact, today, the temps are extremely warm, across most of the country and pretty much the entire country is above where your average temps are this time of year and tomorrow, we'll see this heat builds further, getting to 61, dlee

are looking at just fantastic weather across the northeast and new york city especially. but the west coast is where we are going to see a whole lot of rain later on today. we also had lake-effect snow. you can see it sort of winding down in intensity. it is stretching all the way up to albany and birkshires and massachusetts. we're going to see that taper off as winds start to ease over lake ontario later on today. we are going to see another huge storm though hit western california and into oregon and washington state. we could end up with more than 12 inches of rain over the next 72 hours especially across northern california. but the eastern half of the country is looking really nice. we're going to see a lot of sunshine all through new york city, across the northeast, a little chilly right now in the 30s. but we're going to top out in the mid 40s later on this afternoon much as everyone heads on down to check out the christmas tree in person, it does look fantastic. bill, i guess now it's time to toss it back over to you. >> let me get this right, dylan, i get here for years and i get

to determine if i was in the city where at least the winning ticket was sold. i found out i wasn't. million also have that moment this morning. so many people put their $2 down on the counter to win the largest powerball jackpot ever at $588 million. the second largest lottery jackpot, that was 656 million last march. this is happening because powerball made a move at the beginning of this year, increasing the ticket price from $1 to $2, which doubled the starting jackpot from 20 million to 40 million, and then the top winning jackpot average from 141 to $255 million. i got to tell you why i'm in mapleton, georgia, this is one of the busiest locations in the state of georgia for buying powerball tickets. why? there's a sign on the front window that tells you. in 2010 they sold a winning ticket worth $116 million. a lot of people thought this would be a lucky location. >> more than a half billion dollars. what's the cash pay out then? >> cash pay out is about $385 million. and a lot of people were chasing that. we know at the peak, 133,000 powerball tickets were sold aper minute across the 4
